Description: Title: The Bachelor Life Author: George Jean Nathan Illustrated by Irma Selz Publisher: Reynal & Hitchcock (1941) Description:RARE in dustjacket.Famous theater critic and writer George Jean Nathan's book about The Bachelor Life concentrating on being a single man with all its ups and downs. The book is supposed to be comedic and is what I describe as snarky. Fantastic period illustrations by Irma Selz. This is a very interesting book relating to New York. Contents:I. Mythology 1Il. The Social Whirl 29LI. Cafés, Restaurants, and Night Clubs 69IV. Gastronomy 99V. The Spirit World 123VI. The Ladies 145VII. New York 203VIII. Afield 231IX. Emily Postscript 257 From the dust jacket flap:The bachelor has been The Forgotten Man of the ages. Even that omnium-gatherum of human wisdom, Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, interposes only two entries between him and oblivion. In ancient Athens they tortured and mocked the bachelor. In Rome he bore the ultimate insult—he was not permitted to make orations! In France they taxed him outrageously. In America today they invite him to dinner parties and invariably seat him between two dewy young things of sixty who are on a reducing diet and thus are free for two hours to assault his right and left ear with what, in more charitable circles, passes as conversation. But every bachelor, like the gay dog with which he is often erroneously compared, has his day. Here one of America’s noted bachelors sets down the frank facts of bachelor life as it is currently lived by the more urbane and civilized fellows who have miraculously preserved their liberty in a world where little of it is left. In the mythology and folklore of the bachelor life, Mr. Nathan finds amusement in the prevalent idea, entertained chiefly by very young girls and older married folk, that the bachelor is always having a hell of a gay time. But while he is delightfully engaged in demolishing that misconception, Mr. Nathan obviously has such a hell of a gay time on every page that envious benedicks will shortly have Reno and other such melting pots abandoning the forty-hour week. Mr. Nathan skips blithely through the whirl of the bachelor’s days—and nights—deftlysevering heads with the snickersnee of his wit. Cafés and the society which, after its fashion, adorns them; cocktail parties, the formal dinner, week-ends in the country, winter sports, the costume party, late hours, hangovers, fakeconnoisseurs of food and wine, vacations, gastronomy and, of course, the ladies are all seen .through the bachelor’s observant eye—and no bachelor ever wears rose-tinted pince nez. In this jolly jaunt through the more amusing aspects of the single life, it will be discovered that: 1. The bachelor is not “synonymous with a bartender, a guide to the night life of the city, a confidential directory of all the great stage beauties since Lily Langtry, a prestidigitator ofsandwiches, and a sweet reprobate generally.” 2. There is no foundation to the notion “that a bachelor is especially blessed by Providence and is a combination of William Wycherley, Casanova, and recherché maitre d’hétel, with slight overtones of Florenz Ziegfeld, Basil Zaharoff and Moét and Chandon.” 3. Only the unitiated hold to the idea that a bachelor’s domicile is conducted largely on the pattern of a sorority house and that the moment a fair creature shows up in it she is plied with absinthe, shown a reproduction of Leda and the Swan, and then peremptorily offered the alternative of something worse than death or being kicked out.” 4. At the usual dinner party, “after you have been prepared for the electric chair, the warden, dressed like a butler, comes in and announces that everything is ready for the execution.”’ 5. “The week-end house-party idea was devised by the same genius who invented the dentist’s drill and who coined the word small-pox.” 6. “It is pretty hard for anyone to distinguish exactly where English unheated houses leave off and winter sports begin.” 7. “The only safe recommendation for a hangover is to keep tight all the time.” The next best thing to the bachelor life itself is the vicarious enjoyment of its unquestioned joys and advantages through the pages of this book by one of the luminaries of the profession of gay belles-lettres. About George Jean Nathan from Britanica0George Jean Nathan (born February 14, 1882, Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.—died April 8, 1958, New York City, New York) was an American author, editor, and drama critic, who is credited with raising the standards of play producers and playgoers alike. Nathan graduated from Cornell University in 1904 and joined the staff of the New York Herald. Beginning in 1906, he was at various times drama critic for numerous magazines and newspapers, but his name is particularly associated with The Smart Set, of which he was co-editor (1914–23) with H.L. Mencken, and with the American Mercury, which, also with Mencken, he helped to found in 1924. As a critic, Nathan championed the plays of Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, George Bernard Shaw, Eugene O’Neill, Sean O’Casey, and William Saroyan. Nathan published his Theatre Book of the Year annually from 1943 through 1951, as well as more than 30 volumes of lively essays on theatrical and other subjects. Nathan married the actress Julie Haydon in 1955. His correspondence with O’Casey was edited by Robert G. Lowery and Patricia Angelin as My Very Dear Sean: George Jean Nathan to Sean O’Casey, Letters and Articles (1985). Condition:Book is very good with light wear. Spine and corners very good. Book is tightly bound. No writing. Ffep has ghost of old price sticker and some offsetting to where dj meets endpaper. Dustjacket is fair - good with general wear and losses especially at crown of spine with some small scratches and tiny hole along spine. Rear panel is dirty/darkened with discoloration and has a torn piece of glossy part of DJ where white of paper is showing instead of the glossy paper of the DJ. See photos #3 and fourth to last photo. DJ is not price-clipped and retains original $2.50 price on lower portion of rear flap. Overall DJ presents pretty nicely despite above described flaws. See all photos or ask for more. We may upgrade your package at our discretion to USPS Ground Advantage. Package will be shipped within 4 business days after payment - usually faster. The USPS can be notoriously slow, it could take 2-3 weeks for delivery. Please take that into account when leaving feedback, that we will ship quickly, but the USPS can take a long time to deliver, and we have no control over delivery time. Why Shipping Costs Are What They Are: eBay users may note that postal rates increased AGAIN on July 14, 2024. That's EIGHT price hikes in 4 years. This was the largest single price increase ever: 10% on media mail. USPS shipping is getting expensive, but eBay also charges sellers 15% on the shipping cost (+ the taxes), in addition to the actual package shipping cost. That fact and the USPS business model has made shipping prices rise quite a bit since 2019. In 2019 a one pound package sent via media mail cost $2.75. Today it is 68% more to send the same package. This is all part of the bi-annual price increases starting in 2020 & the misguided USPS 10 Year Plan - “Delivering For America,” implemented in 2021 which twice per year, every year until 2030 will keep increasing rates, while the USPS continues to lose billions of dollars. Combined Shipping if you Buy or Win Multiple Auctions Multiple book/media auction wins will qualify for combined shipping when possible. Do not pay until auctions you are bidding on are complete. Email to let us know that you will be bidding or have won more than one item. A revised combined invoice will then be sent after you tell us you are done bidding. Otherwise, if you pay before all auctions are complete or pay separately - combined shipping is not available. Sales Tax: If your state has sales tax, it is collected by eBay & then paid to your state tax authority. Sellers do not make money from this but are charged a percentage by eBay on the total sale including tax – insane, but true. Returns No returns. We describe all items conservatively. However, If there is a problem, message us through eBay messages to let us know what the issue is before contacting eBay or initiating a return or leaving feedback and we will work it out. We want satisfied customers. Feedback: After you receive your item and are satisfied, please leave positive feedback and after you do we will reciprocate. Questions There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Please ask any and all questions before bidding. Photos & Descriptions Photos are of the actual item depicted and are part of the description, please view them all. No stock photos, as many other “bulk sellers” listings are used, which doesn’t show the real item you will be receiving. Descriptions are carefully written and detailed so you know exactly what you are bidding on. We reserve copyright to all our own descriptions & photos. About In the used and rare book business for over 35 years and on eBay for over 25 years.
