How good is it? The U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG)/DEVGRU assaulters/operators on the Usama Bin Laden UBL kill team wore Dominator headsets during the op…so, pretty good. The Dominator is a bone-conduction headset that also incorporates in-ear electronic hearing pro (hearing protection). At $2,000 per unit, The Dominator isn't cheap, but quality equipment never is. Besides, how much is your life worth? Crucial survival equipment isn’t something you want to skimp on when you’re participating in a balls-to-the-wall/all-bets-are-off Direct Action (DA) mission. All Dominator headset tactical communications suite components are top-notch, including the Phonak in-ear electronic tactical hearing pro and right-angle ODU connectors, that are watertight and crucial to the Dominator’s combat-reliability. The headset was custom designed, developed and built specifically for a specific U.S. military Special Operations (SPECOPS)/Special Warfare (SPECWAR) team/unit with very demanding requirements, including waterborne and "over-the-beach" operations and direct action (DA) missions. The Dominator custom tactical comms headset system represents the current state of the art in custom military combat/tactical comms headsets, and is the slickest and seemingly most capable tactical headset Defense Review has seen, to date, based on its specifications and the set of SOF requirements it was developed to meet, including reliability and durability during waterborne/"over-the-beach" operations. A. Bone conductors on each side of the face that pick up radio communications and pass them through the facial bones directly in front of each ear and carry them to the inner ear. B.) In-the-ear earpieces that feature miniature speakers that direct radio communications specifically to each inner ear canal.The two forms of radio RX can be utilized in tandem, or the electronic earpieces can be removed and stored magnetically onto each headset side-piece housing. This allows the operator to maintain radio comms via the bone conductors positioned on each side of the face. Radio TX is carried out via waterproof/noise canceling boom microphone on an articulated boom arm. The DOMINATOR combines a waterproof/noise canceling boom microphone for TX while utilizing both bone conductors and electronic earpieces for radio RX. The bone conductors and electronic earpieces work independently of one another as well as inconcert when operational requirements call for the implementation of hearing protection. When hearing protection is not required, the earpieces can be removed from the ears and stowed out of the way via a magnet assembly on each earpiece cable. Radio RX is maintained without the use of the electronic earpieces via twin bone conductors integrated into the headset. Radio transmissions are received via the facial bones directly in front of each ear and passed via bone conduction to each inner ear canal. The DOMINATOR met the requirements of the U.S. NSW client, including a simple to use plug and play design, the ability to engage and disengage hearing protection at will, little or no maintenance, no main push-to-talk batteries or software upgrades as well as not having something in, on or over the ears at all times to maintain RX and TX capabilities
