Labrador is where Labradorite was first discovered. It has a distinctive flash of iridescent colors which is known as labradorescence. These beautiful flashes of color change according to the angle of light refraction and the source of the light itself. Labradorite was one of the stones frequently used in jewelry in France and England during the 18th century. The hardness is 6.0 to 6.5 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness. Spectrolite is a trade name for Labradorite from Finland. Black Moonstone is a name given to examples of Labradorite that have bluish inclusions. Labradorite typifies the sun and is occasionally referred to as The Gem of Light. Colors: Labradorite's color is gray to smoky black with flashes of color.
