Description: Extremely unusual card of 8 collectible clothing buttons -- RECOLLECTIONS of DOROTHY KENDALL -- all are of the Studio variety. Studio buttons were produced by button artists and collectors for the antique button collector's market. These eight were all hand-made by DOROTHY KENDALL during the 1940s and 1950s, and all are signed by the artist -- DK. Ms. Kendall produced many highly collectable Studio buttons during the mid 1900s, including a series on presidential first ladies. Five of the button -- those on the left side of the card are made of pottery -- and all are covered with a shiny glaze. The three near the lower right corner are made of carved and painted plaster. The buttons are molded into various CHRISTMAS related shapes, including; a Santa, a Christmas tree, a bell, a snowman, and several with floral designs. The buttons range in size from 1-inch, to over 1.5 inches. Another great thing about this collection is the display card itself. I'm not sure if this card was designed by Ms. Kendall herself to display the buttons to be sold as a set, or if it was designed by a collector of that era. However, this was likely put together in the 1950s -- at the time these buttons were created. The card is decorated with vintage felt, lace ribbon, some imitation holly, plus there is an original turn-of-the-century Christmas card displayed on the upper right quadrant. The cardboard for this tray was originally used to display many smaller buttons, which is obvious when you see the back of the card and all the holes that were previously used. The handwritten $180 price was what my mom paid for it many years ago. Please refer to the ruler pictured in the image for the exact sizes of the buttons. Overall condition: Solid Good+ to Excellent..... The three plaster button near the lower right all have some paint chipping -- this is especially true of the top button with the white flower -- the chips are pretty minor on the middle and bottom buttons. The pottery buttons are in much better shape. There was a mold flaw on the Christmas tree button, resulting in two surface imperfections. The other buttons have some crazing in the shiny finish -- much like what you would find in a Satsuma button, but otherwise, they are in great shape. Overall, this rare and unusual card will display beautifully. See attached photos for more detail on the condition. ***************************************** PLEASE NOTE: I am NOT an expert on vintage buttons. My mom -- Nancy Moran -- was a longtime member of the National Button Society, plus was active in several local button clubs in New York. She is downsizing, so I am helping her sell some of her collection. But I am not familiar with all the terminology and intricacies of button collecting. I try to use various notes she left with the buttons to describe them to the best of my ability, but understand that any terms I use in describing these items, are not terms I am familiar or experienced with. So please use the attached images to form your own opinions. I am also not knowledgeable on the hobby criteria in condition grading -- so I use my condition grades in a commonsense manner -- as if grading any collectible -- they are not based on any hobby standards. Please contact me if you have specific questions, and I will answer them as best I can. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
