I've sanded the faces to 120 grit on my rotary drill press sander. I've lightly oiled the surfaces in the thumbnail pictures with mineral oil. Goncalo Alves is not an endangered or threatened species and is found in Brazil. There are no cracks or defects. I made wooden jewelry that I sold at art and craft shows for 30 years, retiring in 2010. I made these from left over cutoffs of lumber I bought back in the 1980s and 90s.
