Description: VERY RARE Antique 1890’s Signed Russian Brass Samovar:Complete Set(Belonged to One Family)This is a rare find: a magnificent authentic antique brass samovar made in Russia during the 1890’s. Handmade of heavyweight brass, it is complete with all of its components and has been in my family since it was purchased by my great grandparents in Russia and brought to this country when they were fleeing horrific pogroms in the early 1900’s. It is a miracle that it has survived some 130+ years completely intact with all of its original parts. With no damage and no dents, it has not been polished for as long as I have had it in my possession … some 60+ years. Comparable complete Samovar sets sell at auction for thousands of dollars. There is an inscription on the front of the Samovar cover that is most likely written in Cyrillic (see pictures). Measuring approximately 21½” with the mounted teapot, the Samovar set consists of: 1. The Body: the main container for the water that is being kept hot.2. The Base and Chimney: the base holds the burning fuel and the chimney allows steam to escape.3. The Cover and Steam Vent: the cover closes the container and the steam vent releases excess steam.4. The Handles: used for lifting and carrying the Samovar.5. The Tap and Key: the faucet for dispensing heated water.6. The Crown and Ring: the top part of the bowl.7. The Chimney Extension and Cap: additional parts for the chimney.8. The Drip-Bowl: collects any liquid that drips.9. The Teapot: holds the concentrated brew.10. The Tray: for carrying the complete Samovar. History of the Samovar: The Samovar was first introduced to Russia from Mongolia in the mid-1700s. With the introduction of tea, Samovars became popular as a source of accessible hot water and for warmth from the bitter Russian winters. Most importantly, Samovars were the center of cultural life. Yet, during periods of war, Samovars were routinely melted down to be made into bullets and arms … and in times of peace, the bullets, swords, cannons and guns were melted down to make Samovars!Handmade by very skilled artisans, no two Samovars are alike. Made of many different types of metals, including iron, copper, brass and bronze, the design elements and embellishments were limited only by the creativity and craftsmanship of the designer. Each Samovar is therefore distinct. At the height of Samovar production in the late 1800s and early 1900s, "factories" in Russia turned out only a few Samovars per day. Expensive to purchase, it is easy to understand why beautiful Samovars were prized possessions of so many immigrant families. Please take a minute to look at our other auctions.
