Jean-Loup Jacques Marie Chrétien, born August 20, 1938 in La Rochelle, is a French air brigadier general, fighter pilot in the Air Force and astronaut at the National Center for Space Studies (CNES) then at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), following his European retirement and American naturalization in 1999.He became the first Frenchman, the first French-speaking and the first Western European astronaut in 1982 during the Franco-Soviet PVH mission aboard the Salyout 7 station. He is also the first non-Russian and non-American to perform a spacewalk1.BiographyOrigin and formationJean-Loup Chrétien followed his school curriculum at the municipal school of Ploujean, at the Saint-Charles college in Saint-Brieuc and at the Notre-Dame-du-Mur high school in Morlaix2. Then he followed the preparatory class for the Air School at the Saint-Charles high school in Saint-Brieuc.He joined the Air School in 1959, graduating two years later as a licensed fighter pilot and holding a master's degree in aeronautical engineering.Military careerHe then joined the 5th Orange fighter squadron where he flew a Super Mystère B2 then a Mirage III2. At the beginning of the 1970s, Jean-Loup Chrétien became a test pilot at the Istres Flight Test Center, he was responsible for the Mirage F1 program from 1970 to 1973. He was appointed commander in 1972. In 1977, he was appointed deputy head of the South2 air defense division.Jean-Loup Chrétien was placed on secondment duty with the National Center for Space Studies between 1980 and 1991, then was reintegrated into the ranks of the air officer corps3.Astronaut activitiesFrench badge of the Franco-Soviet PVH (First Manned Flight) mission, aboard the Soyuz T-6, in 1982.In 1979, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, then President of the Republic, went to the USSR, where he met Leonid Brezhnev, the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (main leader of the USSR) who offered him send a French astronaut into space aboard a Soviet rocket4.Jean-Loup Chrétien, Air School engineer and lieutenant-colonel, was then selected as an astronaut at CNES in 19802. After two years of training at Star City, near Moscow in the USSR, to prepare for the Franco-Soviet PVH (First Manned Flight) mission, he carried out the first French manned flight from June 25 to July 2, 1982, during 'a Franco-Soviet mission5. The first Frenchman, but also the first Western European in space, he was an on-board engineer for the Soyuz T-6 spacecraft and the Saliout 7 station during the PVH mission where he carried out nine scientific experiments in orbit in the fields medicine, biology, astronomy and the development of materials in space. Patrick Baudry is then his understudy.Training in the cockpit of the Shuttle AtlantisIn 1984-1985, he underwent astronaut training at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He is training in case he has to replace Patrick Baudry, who is to fly on the STS-51-G mission. No problem occurring, it remains on the ground2.In 1988, he was part of the ARAGATZ mission. He made a second space flight aboard Soyuz TM-7 (from November 26 to December 21, 1988), at the end of a new two-year training in Star City2. He participated in the program of experiments of the Franco-Soviet scientific and technical mission ARAGATZ aboard the Mir station. On December 9, 1988, he carried out, in the company of Alexander Volkov, an EVA (extravehicular walk) of almost six hours (5h57, then a record for the duration of a spacewalk6) following a problem during of the deployment of a structure. This increase in the duration of the EVA led to a breakdown of the anti-fog system and the visor of his helmet became fogged up, preventing him from seeing properly. The two cosmonauts had difficulty closing the airlock behind them, and the little autonomy remaining in their suit became critical4.On December 14, 1988, he was in a duplex with the entire team of “Club Dorothée” in the studio at Plaine Saint-Denis.Jean-Loup Chrétien 15 days before his third flightCompared to its first flight, improvements to the Soyuz launcher, particularly in terms of engines, have made it possible to increase the payload. The crew was therefore able to take on board more personal items7 and Jean-Loup Chrétien took on board a small Yamaha keyboard7, having been an amateur organist since a young age8.Finally, he was selected for the American mission STS-86 which took place from September 25 to October 5, 1997. He participated as a mission specialist in NASA flight STS-86 aboard the American shuttle Atlantis, docking with the Russian orbital station Mir, where he stayed for four days9. On board the station, he retrieved his small keyboard, which had been there since his flight in 1988, i.e. for 9 yearsDecorations and honors    Commander of the Legion of Honor Commander of the Legion of Honor2    Knight of the National Order of Merit Knight of the National Order of Merit2    Aeronautics Medal Aeronautics Medal2    Gold Star Medal of Hero of the Soviet Union.gif Hero of the Soviet Union (received in 1982, following his first Soyuz flight)13    Order of Lenin ribbon bar.png recipient of the Order of Lenin.    Orderredbannerlabor rib.png recipient of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor    Medal For Merit in a Space Exploration (Russia 2010) ribbon.svg recipient of the Medal For Merit in Space Exploration of Russia (received on April 12, 2011 from President Medvedev).Jean-Loup Chrétien also won the Henri Deutsch de la Meurthe Prize from the SPORTS Academy in 1988, rewarding a sporting event that could lead to material, scientific or moral progress for humanity. He was elected “Breton of the year” by Armor magazine in 1997.
