Cover: Model created for NEWSWEEK by Robert Zakarian's Prop Shop. Photo by Ed Gallucci. TOP OF THE WEEK: A BREAK IN INTEREST RATES: At last it seemed that ruinous interest rates were on the way down, and that--along with passage of Ronald Reagan's tax-and-cut package--was enough to persuade investors that the long-awaited recovery from recession was on the way. Trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange shattered records, and the Dow Jones industrial average posted its biggest one-week gain in history. Was last week's market euphoria premature? NEWSWEEK analyzes the fall in interest rates and the prognosis for the economy, assesses Wall Street's wildest week and provides a range of advice from investment counselors on what falling rates mean for the middle-income investor. MEXICO'S BAILOUT: With its economy in shambles and its oil revenues in sharp decline, Mexico brushed close to bankruptcy last week. Western creditors agreed to help out, but the near default on Mexico's loan endangered several U.S. banks and again demonstrated the world banking system's vulnerability to the Third World's mas- sive debt. THE PLO PULLS OUT: After two months of bombs, shells and horror, Israel's siege of Beirut moved toward a peaceful climax last week as hundreds of Palestinian guerrillas boarded ships and headed for refuge throughout the Arab world. It was a remarkable moment for Mideast diplomacy and an impressive achievement for special U.S. envoy Philip Habib. But now Lebanon's chaotic factions must try to put the country back together. DREAM CARS: Outdated and oversize, the shiny, tailfinned chariots of 1950s drive-ins and drag strips are roaring into fashion again. A growing fleet of the golden oldies is commanding fancy prices from aging hot rodders who want to cruise down memory lane. THE DEVIL'S DUE: Satan is in vogue again, firing up the credulous, piquing the curi-ous--and sending scholars on the trail of his mysterious origins. Religion Editor Kenneth Woodward takes a new look at the Devil and why he is bedevil- ing modern man. NEWSWEEK LISTINGS: NATIONAL AFFAIRS:. A break in interest rates (the cover).
