Nathan was probably the most important dramatic critic of the 20th century, certainly of the first half of it. He was also co-editor with H.L. Mencken of The Smart Set, co-founder of The American Mercury, founder and editor of The American Spectator and later a columnist for The New York Journal-American. He is also said to be the basis for the acid-tongued film character Addison De Witt (played by George Sanders) in the Oscar's 1950 Best Picture winner All About Eve. Also a famous ladies man Nathan had a decade long affair with actress and silent film star, Lillian Gish before finally marrying respected actress Julie Haydon in 1955. He died in 1958 aged 76.
