The Swiss Zenith watch company was founded in 1865. Prior to the acquisition, Zenith watches had won many prizes for their precision and quality in the Swiss watch industry.After the acquisition, Zenith Time Company produced a line of moderately priced electronic quartz watches in the 1970s; however, Zenith Radio Corporation wanted its Swiss watchmaking subsidiary to produce only electronic quartz watches which they viewed as the future of watch manufacturing. They went so far as to tell their Swiss subsidiary to dispose of its equipment for making automatic watch movements.Unfortunately, Zenith Radio Corporation faced its own economic challenges in the 1970s. As a result, its foray into watchmaking was short-lived. In 1978, the company exited the field when they sold off their money-losing Swiss watchmaking subsidiary.Zenith SA continues in operation today. The company was purchased by LVMH in November 1999, becoming one of the several brands in its watch and jewelry division.
